August 16, 2022. As part of her non-profit placement with the Public Justice Food Project, TZ Public Interest Fellow Leora Friedman served as one of the counsel for the Brief of Worker Safety Advocates as amici curiae supporting Karen Ross, Secretary of the California Department of Food & Agriculture et al. The National Pork Producers Council is challenging provisions of California’s Proposition 12 that regulate in-state sale of pork products as unconstitutional. The brief synthesizes research from numerous experts to explain how Proposition 12 addresses the in-state risk of zoonotic disease—diseases which can spread to humans—from swine that were subjected to extreme confinement, and shows how this highlights Proposition 12 as “a constitutional expression of California’s police powers to protect the State.”
