During her Fellowship, Jennifer Thelusma gained experience in a wide range of practice areas, including consumer protection class action and whistleblower litigation. For example, Jennifer investigated and drafted complaints for multiple class actions initiated when airlines and universities failed to issue refunds for services not received in the wake of COVID-19. Jennifer also participated in a broad array of motions practice, including drafting opposition motions to dismiss, motions for class leadership, motions for class certification, a motion for default judgment, and motions for preliminary and final class action settlement approval. Jennifer was able to first- and second-chair depositions in a matter against a corrections institution for excessive force, leading to a successful settlement on behalf of her client. Jennifer also participated in successful cross-summary judgment briefing and mediation in the qui tam matter Ex rel Scott v. Arizona Center for Hematology and Oncology resulting in a significant recovery on behalf of the United States.
As part of her Fellowship, Jennifer spent three months working on the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs’ (“the Committee”) disability rights team. There, she worked on a case challenging a local jail’s failure to provide disabled students with the public education they were entitled to under IDEA for over fifteen months. Her other projects at the Committee included interviewing potential expert witnesses for a disability discrimination and excessive force case and investigating state agencies’ failures to provide accommodations for their disabled consumers.
The experiences and mentorship she gained during her fellowship will carry forward throughout her career.
We look forward to hearing from you.
